CRH Canada’s Women in Science Program

News - August 23, 2022

CRH Canada’s Women in Science Program celebrates the women with STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science) degree holders all across our organization. The shortage of women in STEM in Canada is widely recognized, so on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, CRH Canada took the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of these women within our organization, who create value as they lead and implement critical operational and commercial projects each day.

Furthermore, CRH Canada developed the Women in Science Program as a commitment to develop the next generation of women who will build the future of our company, and the infrastructures of tomorrow. As such, for the second year now CRH Canada supports two community organizations geared at championing young women and girls pursuing a career in STEM. In 2022, CRH Canada added a third organization, geared at mentoring young women at university level who have chosen to study in STEM with Ontario Tech University.

Les Scientifines

Les Scientifines is based in Montreal, Quebec, with more than 30 years of experience in popular science. Their mission is to promote STEM to young girls, encouraging and allowing them to develop skills in these subjects, despite any social or economical issues they may face. At Les Scientifines, participants are engaged for over a year, so the skills and experience gained are long lasting and prepares these young women to pursue a career in STEM. Six women from CRH Canada are involved with Les Scientifines. They lead workshops to share their experience and facilitate science-related activities such as building a bridge and learning how to make concrete, to inform the girls about the variety of opportunities available to them within the construction industry. The General Manager of Les Scientifines shared a heartfelt thank-you about the impact that our involvement has on the girls of the program:

“I would like to thank you warmly for your presentations to our St-Leonard participants. Whether it was the bridge or aqueduct construction, or the activity on concrete, the girls loved it. They told me that your presentations were well adapted to young people and that you were able to explain the different aspects of your work. Several girls even said they would like to become civil engineers!”

The Demix teams look forward to continued involvement with Les Scientifines in the years to come.

Camp Engies

Camp Engies is a non-profit, volunteer-led camp created by women in engineering for future women in engineering. This Ontario-based camp aims to inspire young women to reach their potential in pursuit of an engineering career and provides education and mentorship in an environment free of gender-bias.

CRH Canada has renewed its sponsorship of Camp Engies to inspire and encourage young women to unleash their potential in Engineering. Each summer, Camp Engies hosts a camp weekend in Ontario where young girls come to learn from professional female Engineers, participate in engineering-based activities and in an engineering competition. Our women engineers participate in the camp to teach the girls about the many opportunities available in the construction industry.

CRH Canada is proud to support our employees in helping to shape the future of the next generation of female engineers.

Ontario Tech University

The Ontario Tech Women for STEM program is built on three pillars to engage and empower women:

  • Mentorship and networking opportunities.
  • Investing in scholarships for women in STEM.
  • Celebrating and promoting the achievements of women in STEM with an annual Summit to provide the forum for business and industry leaders to learn more about increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM.

To enhance the success of women pursuing careers in STEM, CRH Canada has launched a scholarship fund with Ontario Tech titled the CRH Canada Group Women for STEM Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded to a female undergraduate student entering their first year of a STEM-focused program at the University in the 2023-24 academic year. Additionally, the student selected can receive the same award in her second, third and fourth years if she maintains academic good standing in a STEM-focused program.

The Ambassadors of CRH Canada’s Women in Science program will mentor the selected student from year 1 to year 4, as well as other female students in the Ontario Tech Women for STEM Mentorship Program during the 2023-24 academic year. This mentorship opportunity will enable our female professionals to share their knowledge of the industry and our business with young women hoping to pursue careers in STEM.

Women in Science: CRH Kids Contest

In 2022, CRH Canada launched a Women in Science contest for the children of its employees. The kids were invited to participate by submitting text or a drawing around the question: “What value do women bring to science?”

Five children were selected as winners for their creative submissions and will receive a gift related to science to support their curiosity and continued learning. They will also be invited to learn more about our company during a day on the job with a female CRH Canada employee.

We invite you to watch the video below that showcases the winners’ submissions.

As we continue to work to increase the success of women in our industry, we are commitment to building an equitable and inclusive work environment for all CRH Canada and Ash Grove North employees. We are dedicated to growing our diversity of talent and fostering leaders of the future.
